Dairy cows: Can reproduction and efficient production be reconciled?

The good management of calving intervals and the average lactation stage of the herd are important drivers of profitability on dairy farms. Analysis of data from farms using the Easy Map® service shows that the dairy farmers recording the best milking performance are those with the lowest lactation stage: cause or consequence? Our experts will be able to answer these questions at the SPACE 2018, which will take place September 11-14 in Rennes, France.

Furthermore, an analysis of national data reveals that the calving interval varies little depending on the herd’s milk production (305-day milk yield). A difference of 8 days, on average, is observed between herds with a 305-day milk yield of under 7000 kg/year and those with a 305-day milk yield of more than 10,000 kg/year.

However, for the same production level, the calving interval variability is very high. Based on these observations and the questions they raise, TECHNA has therefore developed a new strategy aimed at feed manufacturers. “REPROLAC” is based on different tools that can be used by the technician on the basis of the herd’s situation and the dairy farmer’s objectives:

  • A new Easy Map® report entitled “reproduction tracking”. The objective is to track reproduction performance in “real time”. In particular, the tool allows technicians to identify and rank risk factors by importance and to prioritise the actions to be implemented.
  • Depending on situations, a more exhaustive analysis can be performed using the “AUDIT REPRO” tool.

How to manage heat stress in ruminants?

Ruminant specialists at the feed expertise company provide customer support for the roll-out of this new expertise. In addition, the “PROFITAB” app is evolving. Technicians already use it to measure the economic impact of a zootechnical or nutritional choice by dairy farmers. This year, a new function dedicated to heat stress management has been added. “PROFITAB version 2018” evaluates the risk of heat stress, taking into account climatic conditions, herd management and its performance level. By incorporating all these data, it is possible to assess the potential impact of heat stress on milk yields, and also to make targeted recommendations.
