SPACE 2021 POULTRY: Pigmentation in broiler poultry: Feedia meets this major challenge for the sector with its YelosⓇ solution.

The pigmentation of broilers used to be a sign of quality mainly in the south of France. This is explained by the historically higher proportion of maize in chicken feed, which naturally leads to colouring of the animals' flesh.

However, while in the past this expectation of colouring represented one third of the volumes of broilers produced in France, it is estimated that this market could represent two thirds of production in the coming years. The control of this pigmentation process, the ability to predict the results but also to evaluate it are therefore increasingly important issues, both from a qualitative and economic point of view.

Yelos : a stable pigment through a multi-criteria approach

The Feedia experts developed "Yelos" by selecting the most stable origin on the market for each type of pigment and by packaging the product in a dedicated, hermetically sealed, opaque package to protect the pigments from oxygen, light and the aggressive compounds contained in premixes. Multiple trials in experimental stations have shown a gain in pigmentation efficiency ranging from 10% to 30%. When we know that the pigmentation of a broiler chicken costs between 10 and 20 €/t of feed, this represents a very significant economic gain for the feed manufacturer, in addition to the qualitative gain on the pigmentation of the animals.
