To prevent piglets losses during lactation Logo Feedia

Societal concerns about pig production impact major evolutions on farms: massive reduction of restraint (free-farrowing sows, exterior access), reduction of losses during lactation, stop of mutilations (tail docking, castration), reduction of antibiotics use…

In the same time, genetic progress on sow prolificity has reduced average piglet birth weight and litter quality. To this, colostrum intake is lower for each piglet, meaning smaller piglets and more sensitive to pathologies and non optimised performance.

Microbiote

To enhance piglet's robustness

In utero and as soon as they farrowing, sows transfer their metabolic health to piglets: their microbiota, their oxidative status and their immunity. So, in the first hours after birth, colostrum is essential for survival, it contributes to piglets' energy, immunity, and vitality. This is essential for developing their own immunity. The increase in the number of piglets and heterogeneity in the litter, encourage competition between piglets to get access to teats: smaller, more fragile, and less vigorous piglets have difficulties to get access to udders.

Combining plant extracts known for their immunomodulating and regulating actions on inflammatory-type responses, Imun'up has been created to enhance piglets' robustness.
Specific ingredients in Imun’Up contribute to influencing the immune system of sows and piglets. With higher-quality colostrum, Imun'up prepares piglets for weaning without medication.

2 ways of action:

  • Inflammatory route with a modulation of the non-specific response, meaning local inflammation with swelling, redness, and heat
  • Immunogenic route with the increasing of the specific immune response, meaning a better response of humoral and cellular mediation (antibodies, cytotoxic killer cells)

With these two ways, IMUN’UP permits to increase both passive and active piglet immunity by an enhancement of sow immunity and to reduce the immunity gap where immune security is lower.

Mortalité en maternité

Act on sow and piglets

Nutritionist experts of Feedia advise a IMUN’UP incorporation at 2 kg/T of peri partum feed to have an action on colostrum quality or at 1 kg/T of lactating feed. To continue the enhancement of immunity program, IMUN’UP is recommended [1]  at 2 kg/T of prestarter feed and at 1 kg/T of starter feed.

The efficacy of Imun’Up is evident in its ability to improve the quality of sows' colostrum. Indeed, on average, the colostrum IgG concentration from sampled sows is 15% higher with Imun’up than the control group. This immune quality improvement is for all sows, primiparous and multiparous.

Mortalité en maternité

The improvement in colostrum quality leads to enhanced litter quality. Imu'nup contributes to reducing the number of piglets that die within 48 hours after farrowing, as well as the number of piglets crushed.

Feed to piglets, IMUN’UP contributes to enhancing piglet robustness. Trials results show an increase in growth performance with IMUN’UP. Indeed, piglets have a better daily feed intake and average daily gain without degradation of the FCR (*Feed Conversion Ratio), meaning a potential gain of 1.5 kgs at the end of the starter phase.

These actions to fix losses in the lactating period are not exhaustive. Other factors, such as parity, genetics, air circulation, feed system, can be key factors in breeding success. Softwares, nutritional recommendations, and technical skills exist to respond to these needs.
